Perhaps the biggest sales mistake I see so many people make is not understanding or speaking to their audience in a way that resonates with them. Most people promote largely with their goals in mind to make the sale.

And while sure they may consider why their customers want their product, they don’t consider it in any depth or regard to the communication medium being used.

ALWAYS keep your audience in mind and your existing audience is DIFFERENT when you communicate with them on different platforms (email, social media, etc.) even if they are the SAME people.

Email is more commercial, you can broadcast in a more sales focused way to them. But if you copy and paste your promos to your blog or social media, you likely appear a bit tone deaf and self serving.

On more content-based platforms (blog, social media) people want to be informed and entertained. They want some benefit from reading what you posted, even if they don’t but at this time or they’re going to tune you out.

A couple of people inside my Facebook group mentioned affiliate programs recently. Above is a really nice comment I got from on my affiliates. My answer to her was: “Thank you! It’s mostly because I don’t do the work…I just take the glory in telling you about it! “

But it's all VERY intentional.

If you want to have a successful affiliate program, you have to make it EASY for them to promote you.

For me, that means: Giving them a heads up about promotions. Even though lots of online business owners fly by the seat of their pants, many plan ahead.

We personally have a calendar that is accessible to my affiliates at any time, so they can see exactly what's coming up providing all the information they need to promote our products, tell them about all the products in the funnel, copy/paste promotions, the pricing and anything else they need to promote. 

Many will write their own, but when you give them the copy and paste text, they can easily schedule all those promotions. They might use them for inspiration, edit or send it exactly as is, it doesn't matter. We give them a promotion for each day of the launch and more emails means more money as there is more than one way to promote.

Some affiliates are all about Earnings Per Click (EPC) and will promote the links with the most earnings per click (your sales page). Many affiliates have large audiences but are a little less aggressive in their promotions. If they want to promote a free offer, we always give something free that leads to a funnel. Plus the bonus is, our affiliates grow our list for us. 

Evergreen promotions.

Instead of just going launch to launch, become a source your affiliates can go to whenever they need a great promotion to send out.

Once our launches are done, we update our Joint Venture (JV) pages and offers to create an evergreen affiliate center with tons of stuff to promote.

And it IS a lot of work, especially when you run 3 or more launches a month like I do. Of course you can do fewer launches and dedicate more effort into them, but either way, having a team to get most of it ready for you ensures that you stay on schedule and have all this great stuff to help your affiliates make money.

An affiliate program is such a great investment for your business, but that's what it is, an investment. Whether it's time, your money or both, it's definitely worth it.

I Dropped All Social Media Unless It Serves A Very Specific Purpose

I decided to drop all social media for my business, unless it serves a very specific purpose.

For those who have known me for a long time, you might know I was a late adopter of social media and I like to take my time to know how something is going to GROW my business before embarking.

And that I always say content should serve a purpose. 

But over time, I fell into the "have to" post mentality and got into posting for posting's sake instead of having a PURPOSE. Like so many people do. 

But I feel that's a big misuse of time, energy and resources...and of those who work for me. 

We had a discussion about in the comments of a previous post, but I think many business owners use social media backward. We think we have to be in there to find our audience, so we can get them to our site to buy our products. 

Instead, I look at it (and somehow started to forget) as an EXTENSION of my business. I want customers, first and foremost...so I focus on the most effective ways to get customers. Not just throwing out content, hoping people will like it and eventually visit my website. 

So this means that, for now, this is what remains...

My Facebook Groups which are designed to keep in touch with my existing affiliates, building a connection with and helping my business. Yes, new people come along for the ride and then may be funnelled back to my business, but the focus is on serving those I already have, so we can maintain a long term business relationship. 

Using social media as an advertising platform...and often to target people who have already visited my website or purchased my products. But of course, to find new customers too because this is an effective commercial way to use social media. 

We're also starting to use Instagram to keep tabs on our community, so we can see and showcase their work. So in this case, I see it as a connecting opportunity, rather than a broadcasting one. 

And of course, the personal part of my Facebook is a communication tool for me to connect and stay in contact with other online business owners, affiliates, etc. I use Messenger more than email.

And for the dog niche, I use Instagram in a similar way because that’s where all the cute dogs hang out!

I'm sure I'll add more in as soon as I discover the purpose, so I can leverage everything more effectively.

My first key lime pie with Tracy Patton Roberts, Shannon Smith and Trish Lindemood in Port Canaveral, Florida in 2016.

We were at a business conference in Orlando, but Shannon was kind enough to take us some distance to the beach because up to this point, I'd never seen or touched the Atlantic Ocean. So another first for me. 

It was a great day, the company was great and the food was delicious. 

I know a lot of people say that having an online business is isolating and sometimes lonely, but I've never felt this. Even though I miss traveling like this right now (like a LOT), there are still plenty of ways to connect with like minded business owners.

One of the smartest things I've done not only for my own sanity, but for my business is to MAKE FRIENDS. 

Online business friends are always good company and it's nice to talk to people who GET you. 

They're great sounding boards, give great advice and are fun to brainstorm with.

They're also great partners. Whether you promote each other's products, do interviews or webinars together or launch a whole business/project together.

Make those friendships now because they'll keep giving back to you long into the future. And even though I miss you guys, I'm so glad we can still keep in touch and help each other out.

Now you guys can add to this or correct me, but I think some of the reasons my customers come back for more are:

* Quality products that are demonstrated in a very clear way, so customers know exactly what they're getting.

* A fun and friendly communication style that self-promotes like crazy, but authentically…so my customers appreciate my recommendations.

* An inside look into my life and business with a willingness to provide practical advice to succeed to help my customers succeed in life, in business and with my products.

You also need to figure out what sets you apart from your own competition. In part, it might be the way you create your products. But in most cases, it's more the image you portray and how you communicate with your audience that draws them to you.

P.S. On further thought, I do think the crow hung around as long as he did was because I did have a conversation with him. Ha, I mean there was a living creature hanging out with me, it would have been rude to completely ignore him. SEE…communication is key!

* Give away a few sheets or a mini printable coloring book as an opt-in offer.

* Add new posts/pages to your website, optimized for targeted keywords.  More optimized website pages means more traffic. Let them download a  sheet or two for free, but have them opt-in for more.

* Post a coloring page to social media, so they can download it. Tell  them where they can get more free…and have them opt-in for the extras.

* Create a free “membership site” where they get new coloring pages  each month or a coloring page a day. Of course, include special offers,  courses and products they can purchase as members too.

* Do a  pay for shipping only offer on your coloring books. They get a free  coloring book…you get a new subscriber on your list. Of course, include  an upsell to add more products to their cart and if possible, when the  book is shipped to them, include more promotional materials.

*  Make a time-lapse video of your coloring page(s) being coloured or even  created…tell them where they can get the coloring page for free.

* Add some coloring pages to your existing opt-in offers for added  interest. For example, if you have a holiday entertaining report, add  some coloring pages that your subscribers can give to occupy their kids  while they prepare for their special  event.

* Befriend others  in a similar niche…see if they want to share your awesome free coloring  pages. Whether they have an official business or just have a great  following of likeminded people, there are mutually beneficial  opportunities here.

* Have a coloring contest or a coloring page  design contest. Showcase your audience’s creativity and you’ll have a  loyal following for life.
